A NEW (ANCIENT) ARCHETYPE

FOR THE PEOPLE

the
idea

I propose an alternative to the default male hero. He dominates the collective Western imagination, but he represents at best half of the human experience. Between the childbearer archetype and our default one, there is symmetry in their overlaps and contrasts: both put themselves on the line for the greater good; where the male hero embarks on an outward, linear adventure which he completes by conquering obstacles, the childbearer’s adventure is visited upon her body where she is, and for her time is circular and unending. She doesn’t conquer obstacles, but rather navigates her relationship to ongoing challenges. Surely, this figure is of vital spiritual importance to everyone.

the
project

I will enact the childbearer as a viable archetype by creating my own small set of conditions in which cultural paradigms can manifest. Firstly, I will create a body of prestigious visual representations of childbearers, referencing the way the male hero has historically been honored in monumental oil paintings. Secondly, I will give physical, interactive form to the way such cultural figures influence our individual identities. Seven mothers will each share their own personal symbol of childbearing. This will both be present in a large oil portrait for each, and developed into a t-shirt design which members of the public can relate to, purchase and wear.

This project is rooted in real experiences from our local Buffalo community. Mothers of color in particular tell their stories here, as people who unjustly face physical peril and loss in our country. For more information about the plan and the reasons underpinning this project, click below.
